Avoiding Problems on the Go

The last thing you want while traveling is to be confined to your hotel room or ship berth. There are a number of things you can do to help minimize the risk of infections - and avoid the embarrassment and inconvenience of diarrhea.

Depending on your destination, you should avoid certain things:

  • Drinking or brushing your teeth with tap water
  • Ice, unless it has been made from safe water
  • Raw fruits and vegetables, unless you can peel or shell them yourself
  • Fruit salads and salads containing lettuce and leafy raw vegetables
  • Meat or fish that hasn't been thoroughly cooked and isn't served to you while it's piping hot
  • Unpasteurized milk and dairy products
  • Food or drinks from street vendors
  • Overindulgence of food or alcohol

If you do happen to suffer from a bout of traveler's diarrhea, follow the advice in the Treatment section to minimize symptoms and reduce your discomfort.
